No sound in call until I change the volume with pipewire

What's the expected behaviour?

On call, I would hear through the earpiece directly

What's the current behaviour?

On call, there are no sounds unless I change the volume using side buttons

How to reproduce your issue?

Switch to pipewire (it was not happening with pulseaudio) Call a number (my voice messaging in my case), you can't hear anything, press a side volume buttons, the sound works

What device are you using?

oneplus-enchilada

On what postmarketOS version did you encounter the issue?

• edge (master branch)

• v24.06

• v23.12 (supported until 2024-07-16)

• I confirm that the issue still is present after running sudo apk upgrade -a

I reproduced this issue on oneplus-enchilada running edge (16/08/2024) with pipewire. As reported in this comment:

• Both earpiece and mic are broken
• Earpiece is temporarily enabled by pressing the volume keys
• Mic is temporarily enabled by opening GNOME Settings Sound panel.

The cause of this issue seems to be earpiece/mic being suspended by pipewire during the phone call.

You can see this in action by connecting over SSH, making a phone call and running one of the following two commands:

$ watch -n 1 pactl list sinks short
100	alsa_output.platform-sound.Voice_Call__Earpiece__sink	PipeWire	s16le 2ch 48000Hz	SUSPENDED

$ watch -n 1 pactl list sources short
100	alsa_output.platform-sound.Voice_Call__Earpiece__sink.monitor	PipeWire	s16le 2ch 48000Hz	SUSPENDED
101	alsa_input.platform-sound.Voice_Call__Mic__source	PipeWire	s16le 2ch 48000Hz	SUSPENDED

You will notice that the earpiece/mic stop working as soon as they become SUSPENDED.

I found the root cause!

There is a workaround already in place to prevent suspend in the soc-qcom-sdm845 package.
Unfortunately the workaround uses the pw-loopback command from pipewire-tools.

pipewire-tools is not pulled in as dependency, installing it manually fixes the call sound issue.

Next step is to figure out where should pipewire-tools be added as dependency.
I just run sudo apk add postmarketos-base-ui-audio-pipewire on a clean pmOS edge phosh installation on oneplus-enchilada.
