Heimdall error: failed to unpack received packet
Flashing fails at 11% with pmbootstrap flasher flash_rootfs.
I exported the .img files using pmbootstrap export then ran heimdall flash --verbose, specifying the system and kernel files to flash. It fails with this log heimdall_log.txt. The error is ERROR: Failed to unpack received packet.
I'm not sure if I should report this to Heimdall as I was able to flash both the stock ROM with heimdall without problems, therefore I don't know if the .img is the problem, or Heimdall or both.
I have tried with and without sparse flash
I have successfully booted the device using Android Recovery Zip.

@minlexx I don't see why it would be a heimdall problem, since the stock ROM I downloaded from sammobile flashed. The KERNEL partition flashes without problems, and the SYSTEM partition always fails at 16% (it used to be 11%, but I think some kernel build has changed this). I could close this issue because I have managed to flash with Android Recovery Zip, but I'm sure other people will encounter this problem.

I don't think my device is the only device with this issue. See for example this other Samsung device. I don't know how, but something needs to be done to identify whether this is a postmarketOS issue or a heimdall issue. Is heimdall even being maintained at the moment?

According to a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge porter
heimdall freaks out about the subpartitions in SYSTEM and won't move past ~7%. You can use pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel and then use netcat or similar to flash SYSTEM, but this is a longer and more redundant method.
Not sure if this is simply because they didn't manage to use sparse rootfs or not.

You could try to flash a non-postmarketOS rootfs with heimdall. If it works, then this is a postmarketOS specific issue, otherwise it is a heimdall specific issue.

There does not seem to be much going on in the repository. But if you are certain that it is a heimdall specific issue, you could kindly ask the author if they would like to work together with you on fixing this problem (if you want to invest the time). Usually, this involves sniffing the USB traffic and sending it to the author or analyzing it yourself and patching the heimdall code.
