0013: Guidelines for Proprietary Software
This proposal outlines the requirements and expectations as to when and how proprietary software is enabled on postmarketOS. Specifically, the focus is on packages that only exist to enable the use of proprietary software (e.g. open source components that integrate with the software, runtime environments, and bootstrap utilities).
This is the result of various discussions I've had following pmaports!8979, the idea here is not to decide whether enabling Steam in particular is acceptable but to agree on a basic set of guidelines under the assumption that there will be other situations in the future where packages are proposed which only serve to enable certain proprietary software.
In general the viewpoint here is that there are cases where making it easy for postmarketOS users to run specific proprietary software carries larger benefits for the community and the project in the long run, and that we should aim to ensure that we stay aligned with our mission in these cases by ensuring users are informed and reasonably protected.
These guidelines would also apply to enabling the proprietary flathub repo for example (I believe the way things are today where users have to explicitly enable it after first-boot means it would meet the requirements already).
