assistive technology package wish list

    craftyguy, on the postmarketos IRC channel, suggested that I submit a list of assistive technology packages that are currently unavailable in postmarketOS. The following list includes packages that I can't find for Alpine Linux, using an Arch of aarch64. I realize that some of these packages might be available for other architectures, but this seems to be the most relevant one for postmarketOS, going forward.

    Also, the list is very incomplete. For example, it concentrates almost entirely on blind accessibility, ignoring packages (such as text-mode web browsers) which are only incidentally of use to blind and visually impaired users. However, I think it's a good starting point for a discussion.

    I think a bit of background and motivation may be useful, in order to frame the discussion. I'm a retired, sighted developer who wants to put together economical computing systems for blind users. pmOS on repurposed mobile phones answers the cost issue, but we still need to solve the A11y issues.

    I'm working on a design for DoTTY, a Braille Screen Input program, but that's a major effort. In the meanwhile, I'd be OK with requiring users to SSH in, use a portable keyboard, or whatever. However, voice output is critical: Braille Displays are not cheap.

    Although I'm not competent to test most of these packages, I certainly know folks who are. However, they'll need a "plausible promise", per Eric Raymond. This list is a stab at defining some of the additions needed to create this.
