Ability to use methods other than GZIP to compress initramfs
Created by: steamp0rt
Trying to compress everything for amazon-thor (fastboot can't flash 400-500 MB images)... and initramfs building is hardcoded to use gzip!

That sounds like a good feature to support. However you won't save much by doing that, a couple of megabytes in the best case.
For your specific problem, I think it makes more sense to either fix the fastboot problem, or if not possible, rely on the android recovery install (I know, @ata2001 is working on an improved version that works with your non-busybox recovery) or to streamline the netcat flashing method #456 to make it directly usable from
pmbootstrap

I have tested @ata2001's recovery with embedded busybox, it works! However ata did say it needs cleanup before it's PR'd.... so.

@z3ntu why you closed this? It's an enhancement feature, someone might be interested in implementing it. I would leave this open

Isn't it implemented in https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/blob/master/main/postmarketos-mkinitfs/mkinitfs_functions.sh#L271 ?

There doesn't seem to be a big demand for this in the last years so I closed it.
