Needs testing and cleaning up.

Okay, weird. For whatever reason the mypy check passes with alpine:edge (Edge) but not alpine:latest (v3.20). I guess some library on stable is outdated given that both Edge and v3.20 use Python 3.12.6 at the time of writing.
