use WiFi instead of cellular data if both are available

I cannot reproduce in phosh with my pinephone. Can you paste the output of ip route command when you are connected to both wifi and mobile data? Feel free to mask the IP addresses if you want, what I am interested in are the device names and their metrics.

I'm also curious how you know wwan0 is being preferred over wlan0, I don't know of a good way to check that reliably.

I originally noticed this because my cell data is throttled to 100Kb/s. I was connected to WiFi, yet my network was very slow. I then turned off cell data and voila, fast data. I toggled a few times and each time I turned on cell data, my bandwidth dropped to 100Kb/s.

(Un)fortunately, I can no longer reproduce this issue. If y'all think we should close it, we can. I will reopen it if I can track down some concrete reproduction steps.

interesting. ya next time it happens, get the info that @pabloyoyoista requested, the wlan0 metric should be lower (higher priority) than the wwan0 metric. e.g. here's what I see on my phone:

librem5:~$ ip route
default via XX.XX.XX.XX dev wlan0  metric 600
default via YY.YY.YY.YY dev wwan0  metric 1050
XX.XX.XX.0/24 dev wlan0 scope link  src XX.XX.XX.XX  metric 600

I know this is closed but I'm experiencing the same issue on my PinePhonePro running PostmarketOS edge Phosh. The phone is almost always connected to both wifi and mobile data but I received a notice from my cell provider that I used up my available data for the month and am now being throttled. Sure enough, when I turn off my cell service my download rates go up to about 100Mbps. With cell service turned on my download rates are in the KB/s range.

I have confirmed that the wwan0 interface is being used for downloading by running bmon2 and seeing what happens when I run apk update on the phone (via a ssh terminal with GNU Screen running with horizontal splits). You can see here that when downloading with wwan0 (cell phone) enabled

Looking at ip route show default, the wlan0 interface shows up first, so I would expect it to be used, but when wwan0 is available it is used instead.

I'm making a little bit of progress. ipv4 requests seem to be routed through wlan0 but ipv4 requests seem to be routed through wwan0.

Here is a request to postmarketos.org on ipv4

pine64-pinephonepro:~$ ping -4 postmarketos.org

OK so now when I look at the route metrics that paints a clearer picture:

$ ip -6 route show
2607:fb91:2d28:857e::/64 dev wwan0  metric 700 
fe80::/64 dev wlan0  metric 1024 
default via 2607:fb91:... dev wwan0  metric 700 
multicast ff00::/8 dev wlan0  metric 256 
multicast ff00::/8 dev wwan0  metric 256

Looks like the wwan0 ipv6 route metric is lower.

I don't have a good enough understanding of routing policy to know why wwan0 keeps getting chosen. I was able to update the metric value manually and set the wlan0 route lower but it stills keeps choosing wwan0.

So I chose the nuclear option...

I created a file at /etc/sysctl.d/disable-ipv6.conf with the following content (then rebooted):

net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=1

This disables ipv6 entirely and forces my phone to use the ipv4 route, which always prefers the wlan0 interface. So not exactly problem solved, but at least problem worked around... until I need ipv6.

Edit: See MR before for better fix.

Thanks for letting me know about this! After running with my hack for a few hours I noticed it wasn't always working, some traffic was still going through the cell service. With your MR, so far, all traffic is going through wifi again.
