My device is an Asus TF101. It's a special convertible device that has two batteries: one from the tablet itself and one from the dock. With the current battery monitor plugin, I can only see the main tablet battery.
Besides that, it also offers the brightness control of the device more accessible.
My suggestion is to replace the battery monitor xfce plugin with the power manager one.

After:
See that I can easily control brightness now and both batteries are detected and showing.

The battery icon of the xfce4-power-manager-plugin looks awkwardly oversized on the device I own (samsung-serranove, rather low resolution display). However, it can be downsized. I would suggest factor 0.65, I hope that's ok on other devices too. It can be tested by adding following lines to the file .config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css and logout/login (or reboot) thereafter.
Perfect. I've just applied your changes and it looks very good on my device too. Adding a separator is a good choice to keep the panel clean
I can set up an MR. Currently I'm quite busy, it will probably take a few days until I find time to set it up.
Now that we are at it, is it also possible to change this submenu background, so it fits xfce4's default dark theme?
You mean the area marked red in the picture? I think configuration is limited here.
One possibility is to change the theme:
You can try e.g. Menu -> Settings -> Appearance -> Style -> Adwaita-dark. Although this one is very dark, widows, submenus, etc. Contrary to this, the current default theme Greybird (which is also the default theme of original Xfce4) is a mixture of dark and bright: The panel is dark but windows and submenus are light gray.
There are more themes available for installation but I don't have an overview. To name a few: albatross-themes-gtk3, materia-gtk3, materia-dark-gtk3, materia-compact-gtk3, materia-dark-compact-gtk3, numix-themes-gtk3, paper-gtk-theme. Don't expect too much, some look similar, some don't work well. I think there are some more that are not packaged to Alpine Linux.
Another possibility is changing only the panel to dark mode:
Menu -> Settings -> Panel -> Appearance -> Dark mode. (The Panel Preferences window goes dark too but other window remain in Greybird color. However, the Whisker-Menu becomes dark as well.)
Thank you very much for this detailed info, I appreciate it!
I see, it's only a subtle change after all. Installing a different gtk theme and applying it in xfce4 Appearance application can also change this area marked red at the photo, as well as the whisker menu.
I'm also okay leaving this as default in my opinion.
