pinephone: Display occasionally turns on for no obvious reason
Describe your issue
I am "running" my Pinephone with phosh and waydroid, without other software installed. It is not connected to any network (4g,wifi,bt) and just idling. My initial idea was to measure battery lifetime. In this state, I observed multiple times that the display turned on for no reason and sometimes also the notification led (blue) came on.
I did not touch the device nor do anything else to it. Btw.: Battery is at about 31% after 43 hours uptime (starting from 98%).
What's the expected behaviour?
With no events happening, the display should stay off.

The display occasionally turns on.

Just leave the device alone for a while.

Notification led is the suspend notification you get, each time the phone tries to suspend, the LED will blink for a short time. Something wakes up the phone from suspend it seems... I only know a few interrupt based wake up sources:
- Modem
- Powerkey
- Volume keys
But maybe there are more?

The modem is off (by killswitch) and I definitely do not touch any of the keys.
I will reinstall the OS and redo the experiment without waydroid installed. However, if there is a logfile where these wakeups can be traced I'll be happy to check this out, first.

Quick follow-up: I have the device running v21.12 now without waydroid. No "screen on" events observed so far. Uptime is now 1 day and 23 hours, battery is reported with 71% left. Sounds pretty good to me! I will continue the observation.

WayDroid is not merely "not really battery-optimized". Since I installed WayDroid, my phone rarely if ever falls asleep. Usually, instead of falling asleep, the display turns on (and stays on) draining the battery faster than if the display simply stayed off.

Final measurement: After 5d and 2 hours the reported percentage was at 27%. However, aprox 1d later the phone has shut off. After turning it back on, it reports 15% left. I guess I should have lowered the threshold for poweroff for this experiment. Anyways - it seems like the device can idle for around 6 to 8 days with a fully charged battery.
No display-on events occured, so I tend to close this issue here. Or shall we re-use it to track down the battery consumption /display-on issue with waydroid?

I would guess that Android's fairly complex suspend/wakeup handling doesn't interact very well with mainline Linux, Android expects a lot of kernel patches relating to suspend. Maybe poke around
/sys/kernel/debug/wakeup(iirc there's some other suspend/wakeup related things in debugfs or maybe sysfs?)By Caleb Connolly on 2022-01-30T19:54:05
