Galaxy S3 (m0) cannot connect to wi-fi network despite password being entered correctly

What's the expected behaviour?

The Galaxy S3 connects to a wi-fi network correctly

What's the current behaviour?

The device does not connect despite the password being double- and triple-checked for accuracy.

How to reproduce your issue?

1. Open settings.
2. Tap 'Wi-Fi'
3. Select a network.
4. Try, and fail to, connect to the network.
5. Repeat several times, all resulting in failure

What device are you using?

Samsung GALAXY S III (samsung-m0)

On what postmarketOS version did you encounter the issue?

20220616-0629 (I used the latest version both times, I think)

P.S. Fedora Media writer DOES NOT allow flashing images to SD Cards unless SELinux is set to Permissive.

I also came from the Stock ROM before installing pmOS. Here's what I did:

1. I had the m0 on the latest version of the Stock ROM (4.3) before I went through the motions of installing pmOS as per the wiki page.
2. I installed a custom recovery (TWRP) with Heimdall.
3. I constantly had to switch from Fedora 36 to Ubuntu 22.04 due to Fedora 36 not understanding how to open img.xz files.

Did you try the workarounds suggested here: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III_(samsung-m0)#WiFi. I am not sure how to solve this properly at the moment.

I'm not sure why you say that. I use Fedora Media Writer with SELinux set to Enforcing. Maybe it's because I use the Flatpak?

Yes, I tried the command and it worked.

I'm not sure why you say that. I use Fedora Media Writer with SELinux set to Enforcing. Maybe it's because I use the Flatpak?

Ah, I see. I was using the version of Fedora Media Writer bundled with Fedora. It likely behaves differently or is an older version.

We should probably keep this issue open until a proper fix is found.

I had the same problem today. Just installed 20221109-1302-postmarketOS-edge-phosh-22.1-samsung-m0. The i9305.txt firmware workaround made it connect to my wifi network properly.

This device is dedicated to tinkering, so I can test things if needed.

While switching the nvram TXT seems to work for quite a few folks, I wonder if maybe switching to the stock firmware for the WiFi card would fix it as well (currently it uses the generic firmware from linux-firmware-brcm). The main downside is that:

1. The stock version might be older, and
2. if it's anything like the lt01 firmware, the MAC address doesn't get set to a proper value, causing it to be randomized by the driver, which could be a pain for users who need a specific MAC e.g. for assigning a specific IP address in a router.

I did manage to get somewhat better WiFi speeds with stock firmware in my case though, and it also fixed some errors that were getting printed out in dmesg (though it did also add one). Nonetheless, might be worth trying. The smdk4412 firmware (used by Exynos 4 Samsung devices) can be found here: https://github.com/TheMuppets/proprietary_vendor_samsung/tree/cm-14.1/smdk4412-common/proprietary/etc/wifi (I believe bcmdhd_sta.bin_b2 is the firmware file we need).
