Phosh torch slider not changing brightness on sdm845 devices

When activating the "Torch" button in Phosh's top menu, the camera flash LED turns on and a slider appears in the menu.
Presumably this slider is meant to change the LED brightness (scale from 40% to 100%). But changing the slider setting doesn't visibly change the LED brightness. The LED is flickering though, when the slider setting is changed.

Just tried it on my xiaomi-beryllium freshly rebooted with phosh& openrc, and it really does not change the brightness of the torch.

I am remembering seeing the brigness changing when trying a few weeks/month ago, so this could be a kernel issue..
