postmarketOS-welcome app for Plasma Mobile
In Phosh, we are displaying a postmarketOS specific application when running for the first time (screenshots: 1, 2, 3).
It has the following purpose:
- Inform about the state of postmarketOS (beta), that the user should make regular backups
- Note about what's missing (in Phosh case: no loading screens for apps, for example)
- Remind the user to make updates
- Quick introduction to using the desktop environment for the first time
- Link to wiki with a "First Steps" page (with more detailed instructions what users could do after first boot, possibly which apps to install etc.)
- Link to reporting issues: https://postmarketos.org/issues
- Thank people who worked on pmOS and the UI, and invite skilled users to contribute.
The application removes itself from autostart when it launches for the first time, but can be launched manually just like any other app.
I ran Plasma Mobile on the PinePhone today, and thought that it would be useful to have such a welcome application as well. For Plasma Mobile, we would of course write it with Kirigami.
I would keep the "how to use this" part very short, maybe briefly explain how the three buttons at the bottom work (since they are completely different from today's mainstream OS Android and iOS), how to connect to wifi (swipe down, hit settings, not the wifi icon!). Other than that, I'd explain what is broken in postmarketOS right now, for example that applications take very long to start, and point to where that is being investigated. And add the other postmarketOS specific things listed above.
PS: Honestly it's been a while since I ran plasma mobile last time. I like how the new top and bottom bars look like, and that you can simply move icons to the start screen. And you can actually swipe up and down to open these bars (which doesn't work in Phosh currently)!
Thoughts?
