Specific format for chipset names in device infoboxes
Chipset names on the wiki are a bit of a mess (and now that chipset names in device infoboxes became links, it's really showing):
- Most device pages follow the
Manufacturer MODEL General Name
format (for exampleQualcomm MSM8196 Snapdragon 410
). Chipset page names use aManufacturer General Name (MODEL)
format. - Some device pages, however, put the general name before the model.
- Exynos chips are all over the place; one chip can be referred to as the
Exynos 4412
,Exynos 4412 Quad
,Samsung Exynos 4412
,Samsung Exynos 4412 Quad
... - Some pages mention exact chipset revisions, most - don't.
We need a clear set of rules for chipset names on device pages. My two cents in terms of considerations:
- Most developers use the short model names instead of the full-length names (so MSM8916 instead of Snapdragon 410, etc.).
- It might be nice to have the chipset names on the device pages match the format used in chipset page names to avoid having to make redirects for every chipset. This reduces general wiki maintainership effort.
- There are chips that have multiple trade names, or single pages for multiple chips, but that's not the great majority of them.
- Wikipedia lists Exynos chips with the "Samsung" prefix (see Galaxy SIII). News outlets and media often drop the "Samsung" prefix. Samsung's own page drops the prefix (at least for the Exynos 850). GSMArena drops the prefix.
I slightly prefer the chipset page format over the one used in device pages, but I'm curious to hear what others think about this.
Feel free to discuss this in the comments.
(The List of chipsets and devices that use them might be a good reference point for some of the inconsistencies I've mentioned.)
