Screen does not turn on when resuming from suspend in Phosh

Describe your issue

What's the expected behaviour?

When waking up the device with any of the buttons, the screen turns on and displays the lock screen.

What's the current behaviour?

The screen remains off. Volume buttons are still responsive. No clue whether one can just log in blind.

How to reproduce your issue?

Flash pm-edge latest version (prebuilt image 20240801-1826-postmarketOS-edge-phosh-22.3-samsung-a5.img) Perform first boot Wait for screen to timeout, or manually suspend by pressing lock button Attempt to resume.

What device are you using?

Samsung A5 (2015) A500W

On what postmarketOS version did you encounter the issue?

• edge (master branch)

• v24.06

• v23.12 (supported until 2024-07-16)

• I confirm that the issue still is present after running sudo apk upgrade -a

On what environment did you encounter the issue?

Can reproduce on xiaomi-mido. Installed using pmboostrap. Seems like a regression in edge, because v24.06 works fine.

Considering it works in v24.06 for me with xiaomi-mido, I'd recommend the issuer to test with v24.06 too. If it works there I don't think it's a panel issue.

I seem to experience something similar to samsung-m0, except it's whenever I turn the screen off and not just from suspend. That is, when I turn the screen off, it won't come on again unless I restart tinydm (which in turn restarts Phosh). I can still hear the volume buttons doing their thing however. Given that both various Qualcomm and Exynos 4xxx devices seemingly are affected, it doesn't seem like a kernel problem to me. @agx1, do you think it is possible that this is a regression in the Phosh codebase?

I'd say unlikely. We didn't change anything in that regard for ages¹. I'm also not seeing this on the either L5, intel or other devices I'm running and haven't seen any reports from other distros yet (and e.g. Debian/Mobian has 0.40 since some time). I've seen it on onplus,fajita with

[393611.150099] [drm:dpu_crtc_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* no encoder found for crtc 0

in 1 of about >100 resumes which points to the kernel.

Note that pmOS started to add some downstream udev rules (as the upstream hwdb rules don't work on pmos) for GM_WAKEUP_KEY* (to mask wakeup via volume and other buttons except power button). Make sure the power button isn't masked. As usual looking at phosh's and phoc's log (hopefully) tells more.

¹) There was some minor reshuffling in phoc for 0.40 due the drm-panel-transform handing in PhocOutput so a test with 0.39 would exclude that (I'd say that's unlikely the cause either)

Another thing: does pmOS use g-s-d or https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketos/pmaports/-/tree/master/temp/gnome-settings-daemon-mobile ? The later could easily break screen unblank

That's indeed the issue. Replacing gnome-settings-daemon-mobile with gnome-settings-daemon fixes this:

sudo apk add !gnome-settings-daemon-mobile
